Learning Without Limits.

Once a year, the classroom walls come down — and students discover what they're truly capable of.

What Is Week Without Walls?

Week Without Walls is 3 Oaks Academy's signature experiential learning program — a full week, once a year, when the classroom walls come down and the whole school sets out to learn somewhere new. It takes students out of the building and into the world: to explore unfamiliar environments, discover passions they didn't know they had, and define their own path and purpose.

Here, learning happens by doing. Instead of reading about a place, students stand in it — tracing its history, meeting its culture, and exploring its natural environment first-hand. Every day is planned to the minute and packed with adventures and challenges that stretch students a little further than they thought they could go.

Many students struggle to name what truly interests them. Technology and social media quietly narrow their world; Week Without Walls expands it. Along the way, students build independence, confidence, and a tight-knit community with the classmates and teachers right beside them — the kind of growth that's hard to fit inside four walls.

And no child misses out. Students who don't travel on the annual trip take part in a Week Without Walls of their own — a full week of hands-on, experiential learning both on campus and out in the local community, built on the same idea: learning by doing, beyond the classroom walls.

We travel wherever the collective decides to go — the destination is chosen together.

What students gain

A week that changes the year

Students come home from Week Without Walls different than they left — steadier, more curious, more sure of who they are. The growth shows up in small moments at first: a hand raised more readily, a challenge met without hesitation, a new friendship that lasts the rest of the year. Here's what a week away gives them.

New Environments

Stepping into unfamiliar places — a mountain summit, a working harbor, a rocky riverbed — pulls students out of their routines and into full attention. Away from the familiar, curiosity wakes up, the senses sharpen, and learning stops feeling like a subject and starts feeling like an adventure worth chasing.

Real-World Discovery

When students stand in a place instead of reading about it — tracing its history, meeting its culture, exploring its landscape first-hand — knowledge sticks in a way a textbook never could. Hands-on challenges draw out interests and strengths that a desk and a worksheet would have left hidden.

Finding Direction

Technology and social media quietly narrow a young person's world. A week of open exploration widens it again, giving students the room to notice what genuinely lights them up and to begin defining their own path and purpose — the heart of how we teach at 3 Oaks.

Independence

Each day on the road asks students to navigate the unfamiliar — to make decisions, solve problems on the trail, and carry their own weight as part of the group. The small wins add up to a quiet, durable self-reliance: the felt sense that "I can handle hard things on my own."

Confidence

Trying something that once felt impossible — a steep climb, a cold creek, a skill they'd never attempted — and discovering they can do it reshapes how students see themselves. They come back believing they're capable of more, and that belief follows them straight into the classroom.

Community

Shared adventure builds bonds the ordinary school day rarely allows. Students and teachers live the highs and the hard moments side by side, and come home a tighter, more trusting community — the friendships and mentorships that anchor the rest of the year.

Good to know

Week Without Walls FAQs

Where does Week Without Walls go?
The destination changes each year — and it's chosen together by the collective. Our 2026 trip is Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in the Great Smoky Mountains.
Who goes on the trip?
Week Without Walls is part of the in-house experience at 3 Oaks — students explore and grow together as one group.
What if my child doesn't go on the annual trip?
No one misses out. Students who don't travel on the annual trip have a Week Without Walls of their own — a full week of hands-on, experiential learning both on campus and out in the local community, with the same spirit of exploration, challenge, and discovery.
What will my child actually do?
Students explore new environments, take on real-world experiences and challenges, and reflect on what sparks their curiosity — all alongside teachers and classmates who know them well.
How is this different from a typical field trip?
A field trip is an afternoon. Week Without Walls is an immersion — a multi-day experience designed to expand a student's world and help them find direction in their learning.
What if my child has additional needs?
Our small ratios travel with us. The same teachers who support your child every day are there throughout the trip — talk with our team about anything specific your family needs.
Who plans the trip?
Our founder and Head of School, Pamalea Baker, plans Week Without Walls personally — choosing the destination with the collective and mapping out every day so the week is both safe and unforgettable.
What does a typical day look like?
Every day is planned close to the minute: mornings and afternoons are filled with hands-on adventures, exploration, and challenges, with built-in time to rest, reflect, and regroup as a community. The pace is full, but it's structured so students always know what's next.
Is there an extra cost?
No — for students, Week Without Walls is built into each child's fundraising for the year, so there's no separate trip fee. The exception is if a parent chooses to come along, which is an additional cost for the accompanying adult.
Can I come along?
Parents are sometimes able to join the trip. Because space and logistics are limited, talk with our team early if you'd like to come — an accompanying parent covers their own additional cost.
What will my child come home with?
More confidence, more independence, and a stronger sense of what genuinely interests them — plus tighter friendships and a shared set of memories with the classmates and teachers who experienced it all beside them.
